Green Tye Mission Hall Restoration Appeal

About the Mission Hall

St Thomas’ Mission Hall in Green Tye was officially opened on Sunday 9th August 1909 by the Rt Reverend Edgar Jacob, the Lord Bishop of St Albans. It was erected in memory of Richard Hunt by his third wife, Jessie along with a threeacre field, known as Honey Leys, for use for recreational activity, it provided local residents with a mission room, a centre for less formal church services and a place where people could get together socially. It was built by Much Hadham builder George Longdon Thurgood. Uses for the hall included a Friendly Society, for games, music and refreshments. Mission Services, Sunday School, concerts, and social activities including Santa Claus at Christmas tea’s, Temperance Evenings, gang shows, bazaars, and lantern lectures. Over the years the hall has been used, to name a few, by Coroner’s Inquests, flower festivals, brass bands, as a canteen for airmen from the nearby airfield in World War 2, wedding receptions, birthday parties, wakes, pop group rehearsals, PCC meetings, Parish Council meetings, the Perry Green and Green Tye Preservation Society, the Green Tye Players, bellringers meetings, dance groups, teas and coffees, a Polling Station and with the field for camping by Girl Guides, the Green Tye Football Club, bonfire nights and firework displays.

Once its own charity organisation the Mission Hall now falls under the Much Hadham PCC. It has its own standing committee which looks after day-to-day management. The Hall has been standing for nearly 120 years. It has been extended, decorated, heated and repaired. It is a great local asset.

The Mission Hall, Green Tye is a small, traditional venue in the heart of our village, suitable for parties, exercise classes, meetings and so much more.  The hall comprises of the main hall, a small kitchen and a large field for summer get togethers!

If you are interested in hiring the Hall please email greentyemissionhall@gmail.com  to check dates, prices or just look around the facilities.

Our Plans

It’s a great local asset and, along with the field, is still used for numerous community events but it’s now in need of some TLC. With your support, the Mission Hall Committee would like to update the hall to help make it an attractive facility to use whatever the occasion, from a dance or fitness class, a birthday celebration, a meeting place or any number of other activities. The proposals include:

• Installing WiFi

• Updating the kitchen

• Improving the heating and lighting

• Redecorating and new blinds

• New fencing and gates to help improve safety for children using the hall

• Resurfacing the carpark and installing kerbs

• Repairs to the septic tank

• Installing an audio visual system

• Building a patio to increase usability of outdoor space

• Improving the stage set up

• Replacing the roof
